January 2023 Newsletter
Hi Green Kids!

Welcome to the Green Kids Club Newsletter where you can keep up with the Green Kids Club happenings each month, learn some new things, and challenge yourself as a true Green Kid ambassador for the planet!
Congratulations to our Contest Winner!
Recently, we moved the actual club for kids from Green Kids to Wild Green Kids. We want more children to join our club and learn more about how they can advocate for animals and their habitats both here in our own communities and around the world.

In December, we held a contest asking kids to submit their drawings of Grizzly 399 and her cubs and this is the winner! Congratulations to Lauren Joe Merryn from Georgia and thanks to everyone who participated!

Stories We Have Been Following
P-22 - The Famous Mountain Lion of Hollywood

In 2012, a mountain lion named P-22 did something unique!  He crossed a 10-lane freeway to get to Griffith Park, situated in the Hollywood Hill area of California. He did this because his original habitat was undergoing development, and he needed space to live. He was by far the most famous mountain lion in the world!

But recently, P-22 got in trouble for killing someone's small dog for food. This prompted rangers to set out to catch him and perhaps relocate him if possible. When they caught him they learned he had been hit by a car and had other significant health issues. It was surmised that this was probably why he had started hunting domestic animals. Hear the story here on CNN. Note: the video can be disturbing to viewers.

Beth Pratt was on the team of wildlife biologists and veterinarians who had to make the difficult decision to euthanize P-22. She wrote, "P-22 never fully got to be a mountain lion. His whole life, he suffered the consequences of trying to survive in an unconnected space, right to the end when being hit by a car led to his tragic end. He showed people around the world that we need to ensure our roads, highways, and communities are better and safer when people and wildlife can freely travel to find food, shelter, and families...we must continue to invest in proactive efforts to protect and conserve wildlife and the habitats they depend on — even in urban areas."

His legacy is that the world's largest wildlife crossing is being built over the ten lanes of freeway in Southern California in hopes that animals will have the safe passage they need.  Thank you, P-22 - a new angel.
UPDATE
In 2021, we brought you "A Tail of Three Lions" and introduced you to Blood Lions, the stories of lions bred and held in captivity mainly for hte purpose of trophy hunts. Since then, the South African government announced its plan to support the end of captive lion breeding. This process has been slow, but progress is being made. Right now, you can watch Blood Lions, an award-winning documentary about this industry and its consequences here. You can also check out our Livestream Interview with Ian Michler of Blood Lions.

Legislative Update!
With the end of 2022, we have some fantastic news to share regarding changes in legislation to help animal welfare in the United States. President Biden signed five animal protection measures into law. These included regulations to eliminate mandates for animal testing for new drugs (FDA Modernization Act and Reducing Animal Testing Act), banning race-day doping of Thoroughbreds (Horseracing Integrity & Safety Act), end trading in big cats as pets and to shut down commercial cub-petting operations (Big Cat Public Safety Act, H.R. 263), stopping the sales of shark fins (Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act), and record-breaking funding for Enforcement of the Horse Protection Act (to protect horses from abuse during race horsing).

Great work to our government for signing these measures into law!
Environmental Hero
We are happy to announce our new Environmental Hero for this quarter is David Casselman!

David Casselman, as he puts it, feels called to the herculean task of changing hearts and minds about the importance of helping animals and the planet. An accomplished civil trial lawyer, David spent decades doing pro bono work on animal rights cases in addition to successfully championing litigation and teaching law classes in California.

Now retired from law, he pursues his passion to protect animals and their environments full-time. He is the founder of the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary and has been actively involved in the Whale Sanctuary Project. He has also partnered up with Lek Chailert and Darrick Thompson with the Elephant Nature Park

As the founder of Ecoflix, the world’s first non-profit streaming service devoted to education about nature, animals and related ecological issues, David champions causes around the world. He hopes to use this avenue to reach like-minded people who are passionate and will take action to save animals and the planet.
