The talented Sally White works with Green Kids Club and our Foundation, Love the Wild, with this beautifully designed t-shirt. Monarch Butterfly is Now Endangered
Monarch Butterflies are Now on Endangered Species List

Recently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature declared the migratory monarch butterfly to be endangered, meaning that the species is now considered to have a very high risk of extinction in the wild. The species has declined by over 80%.

The Monarch Butterfly is also a pollinator, as are bees and some bats.  These beautiful butterflies migrate nearly 3,000 miles from the Northern US and Southern Canada to their overwintering destination in Mexico.

What can you do to help make a difference?  Well, plant a garden with milkweed and other plants that are needed for them to have a thriving habitat.  See this video to learn about the Monarchs!
Environmental Hero (Heroine)
We are so happy to announce that Lek Chailert, founder of Save Elephant Foundation, is our Environmental Hero for this quarter.  Lek has helped to save the lives of hundreds of elephants in Asia through her work, where she educates elephant owners and helps them to transition their businesses away from having their elephants be ridden, perform for circuses, and other harmful venues.  Lek's work has received international recognition through mainstream media.  She recently was involved with a story called Love and Bananas - see the trailer - where she teaches us about the elephant's plight.  Lek is known as the Elephant Whisperer of Thailand.  Thank you, Lek, for all your wonderful work - go to this link on our homepage to hear our entire interview with Lek!

What We're Following...
Drought in Kenya and Impacts on Animals and Its People

Kenya is battling one of the most significant droughts they have ever had. And with it comes the considerable loss of wildlife. This photo portrays the backdrop of what Amboseli National Park typically looks like. Right now, the drought is killing more animals and elephants than poaching.

Green Kids works with the OLTOME COMMUNITY VILLAGE located close to the park and through our foundation, Love the Wild (www.lovethewild.org), working to support environmental education, feeding the village children, and also supporting farmers with food for their livestock. If you want to donate to support this project, please click here to donate.
Fire Season and Climate Change
Here in the United States, as well as in other places, fires are burning.  I just returned from the Flathead area in Montana.  Fires are raging. Unfortunately, the dry heat and temperatures aren't helping, and neither is the carelessness of people in the regions.  This fire - known as the Elmo Fire, has burned about 85,000 acres due to man.  Never mind the animals being displaced, homes being burned, air pollution, and other negative consequences.  There are also reports that people are intentionally starting some of the fires here and in other places.

Let's be careful out there - take care of our forests while you are out visiting them or hiking. Follow fire restrictions imposed, do not drive your vehicle over dry brush areas, do not smoke or create a spark, and contact Fire Officials if you see a fire that has started. The high temperatures due to Climate Change are a reality that we must begin dealing with. Watch this video for Fire Safety tips

World Lion Day
August 10th is World Lion Day.

We are past World Lion Day, but we still want to commemorate this time for the work that needs to continue to help the lions in South Africa and other places where they are being exploited.  Green Kids Club co-authored a book with Ian Michler, one of the founders of Blood Lions and leading character in the movie Blood Lions (see trailer).  This movie highlights the exploitation of lions used for interactive activities with captive wildlife in tourism, including cub petting, walking with lions, and voluntourism. These unethical practices form part of the life cycle of a lion in the commercial captive predator breeding industry in South Africa and result in canned hunts of adult lions - while some other lions are used for Asian medicinal purposes. Currently, there are over 8,000 to 10,000 lions in captivity.

In 2021, South Africa's Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Creecy, announced they would stop captive lion breeding. So far, nothing has happened to stop this from what we understand.  Read this article to get an update on what is happening. It is highly informative.
