Establishment of the Thomas D. Mangelsen Conservation Fund in Memorium of Grizzly 399
My friend Thomas Mangelsen followed Grizzly 399, documenting her life through photographs. He has a passion for grizzlies, especially 399. Now that she is no longer with us, he wants to commemorate her life by establishing the Thomas D. Mangelsen Conservation Fund. Funds raised will go to establishing a meaningful memorial in Jackson, Wyoming, and continued conservation efforts to protect grizzlies.

You can purchase a calendar with beautiful images of Grizzly 399, with proceeds going to the fund.

Green Kids has worked closely with Tom for many years, and together, we have produced some beautiful children's storybooks. Our book, Learning About Grizzlies, is full of photos of 399 as she and her cubs teach children about grizzlies. Part of the proceeds will also go to either this fund or the Cougar Fund, which Tom has established.

I recently drove through the Pilgrim Creek area in the Tetons, where Grizzly 399 lived. I was sad to realize that we won't see her again, but her Spirit is there!
Environmental Hero:
Jack Dalton!
Want to learn a little more about Jack and all his work?
 Listen Here!
Jack is our Environmental Hero for this quarter. He is 13 years old and from New Hampshire. Jack has been working on conservation and spreading awareness since he was eight years old! In five years, he has published his own book about his favorite animal—orangutans—held a fundraiser, given many speeches, and won four awards.

Jack creates educational YouTube videos to spread awareness and allow others to learn about environmental issues. He has traveled around the world, teaching others about conservation. In 2021, Jack became an author, publishing his book "Kawan the Orangutang Lost in the Rainforest." The fundraiser Jack held was for orangutang rehabilitation and replantation in the rainforest; Jack raised over $22,000!

Thank You Jack, for your commitment to the environment, and welcome to the Green Kids Family!

Featured Books - Wolf Matriarchs of Yellowstone!
PRE-ORDERS NOW AVAILABLE!!
Wolf Matriarchs of Yellowstone

This winter, we are featuring our upcoming book, The Wolf Matriarchs of Yellowstone, co-authored by Douglas W. Smith (a previous Green Kids Environmental Hero). In a children's format, we have written about the reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park. This book features illustrations from the amazingly talented former Disney animator Andreas Wessel-Therhorn. Part of the proceeds from sales of these books will go to Yellowstone Forever to support Wolf Management at Yellowstone National Park.

COMING SOON - The Red Fox Families of San Juan Island
We will release a new book about the beautiful red fox families in the San Juan Islands early next year. This story focuses on one particular family led by the Matriarch, Windermere, and her partner, Laughing Jack. You'll discover how they manage to survive despite the presence of Zira, the iconic eagle, who always poses a threat to the baby foxes living there. I co-authored this book with Marcia Walters, who recently won the Nature Photographer of the Year award for 2024 under the Portrait Category!

This is the first time we have done a children's book solely with photographs. We are proud and excited to be working with Marcia, whose beautiful photographs we were able to use! Be on the lookout for our announcement! Other photographers included Charles Jansen and photos from Sylvia Medina. Coming soon!

Extinct Wild Hawaiian Crows Are Back After Decades!

On Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, five native Alala crows, also known as Hawaiian crows, were reintroduced into the wild after decades of being extinct. They were released in Maui; the five crows included three males and two females.
The last time the Alalas were found in the wild on the island was in 2002. For the past few years, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has worked with many other organizations to bring this tremendous accomplishment to fruition.
On the island of Puu Makaala, twenty Alala were reintroduced between 2016 and 2020. For several years, the birds were doing well; however, their numbers began to decline, and the reintroduction process was paused.

Kids’ Contest--Write a Poem or Song Today to Make a Better Planet Tomorrow

We are excited to announce we are partnering with Reclaim Planet Earth, founded by Jack Goldenberg. Jack founded the Happy Meal and the Cabbage Patch Dolls, among others. He is now moving on to make a difference in our world by launching this new project to help fight climate change. We are excited to be working with him.  He also is making a difference by working to obtain donations to plant trees. Buying a tree will help to combat climate change, improve air quality, support wildlife, enhance well-being, and leave a legacy for our planet. Part of this effort is being done by the contest we are announcing below!

Your poem or song for our climate change campaign at reclaimplanetearth.com can be dramatic, serious, hopeful, or humorous as long as it calls attention to how we can all live more planet-friendly lives. You’ll find examples of the kinds of poems and songs we’re looking for HERE.

If you’re one of the first 100 kids or young adults 6-18 who submit a poem or song, our heroic tree-planting partner, Trees for the Future, will plant 10 trees in your honor somewhere on the planet they are most needed. And you’ll get a digital Tree Certificate honoring your contribution to children, animals, and future generations.

Send your entry to jack@reclaimplanetearth.com. Do it today. If you have questions, use the same email address to get an answer.

Peace Pointe!

This organization is dedicated to saving animals through adoption. The goal is to take in animals, keep them in a cruelty-free setting, and eventually adopt them from a loving family. Along with this animal-loving space, they are creating a community. The community is meant to create a space where artists gather and bring in vegan-friendly food options. The goal of Peace Pointe is to create a space of peace, community, and love. Morgan Spicer founded Peace Pointe, who has illustrated many of our books.
