White Bison Born!
This is National Bison month. Bison, also known as buffalo, have a long history in America. Millions once roamed the Great Plains, and they were very important to Native American tribes who used them for food, clothing, and tools. In the 1800s, settlers and hunters killed many bison for their hides and to make room for farms and railroads. By the late 1800s, there were only a few hundred bison left. Thanks to conservation efforts, bison populations have grown, and now thousands live in protected areas and national parks.
Recently, an extremely rare white bison was born in Yellowstone National Park, which is considered very special and sacred by some Native American tribes. It is seen as a sign of hope and renewal. This new calf brings excitement and is a reminder of the importance of protecting bison and their habitats. In a special ceremony at the end of June the calf was named "Wakan Gli," which means “Return Sacred” in the Lakota Indian language.
