Very Sad News - Grizzly 399 Killed in Vehicle Strike
It is with a heavy heart that we learned that Grizzly 399 was killed by a vehicle on October 23rd. Fortunately, her cub Spirit, survived the accident and ran off into the wilderness. We hope that she can make it through the winter, as 399 taught her how to hibernate and care for herself. She knows the route back and forth between where her mother died and her home in the Tetons. We pray she will be okay.
Following her passing, 399 was cremated, and her ashes were returned to Pilgrim Creek, the place she loved the most. There is now an empty spot in the Tetons, but she left a significant legacy and many offspring who still live there.
We can hope that 399's death will not be in vain and that, somehow, we can do something to prevent more bears or other animals from being killed by our vehicles.
Green Kids Club has worked with Thomas Mangelsen for many years, writing about Grizzly 399's life in a children's book format. Tom has graciously donated his images to us over the years so we can include them in the science section of our books. We are donating part of our proceeds to help care for animals through the Cougar Fund. Go to Utube to see the tribute to Grizzly 399 by Thomas Mangelsen.
399 is now watching out for her Spirit cub.

Safety for Teton's Animals
Many animals migrate to the Teton Valley between Wyoming and Idaho. In this area, however, a large highway passes through, where many animals would cross. This often results in collisions between humans and animals. This has become a problem that Teton County is solving. For the safety of animals and people, overpasses and underpasses are being built specifically for animals to use. This is in hopes of keeping theirs and our safety in mind. The passes are being built in the Snake River area, which is a hot spot for collisions. According to data collected, there were over 400 collisions between animals and cars in a 3.75-mile stretch of the highway. They hope to have all the bridges built and ready by 2025. But more still has to be done—where Grizzly 399 died, there are no areas animals can pass through without walking on or along the highway. If you'd like to read more, click here!

Our not-for-profit of the month is JH Bear Solutions. Human trash is a huge attractant to grizzlies and other bears who are looking for an alternative food source. When bears learn to get into trash cans, they become habituated to people's food and are often euthanized because of these bad habits. So what needs to be done? Simple - buy bear-proofed trash cans! If you can, please donate to JH Bear Solutions to help buy more trash cans and help those people who cannot afford to acquire them!
