Unique Environmental Experience
Salmon Able to Swim Freely in Klamath River for First Time in Over a Century, CA, OR

Recently, we learned about a soon to be historic demolition of dams along the California and Oregon boarder. Dams were built along the Klamath River and its tributaries back in 1918 to create electricity for the surrounding area.
Since then it has become a major issue within the tribes surrounding and those working in the area with the salmon population. In 2002 there was a devastating outbreak of bacteria killing more than 34,000 fish in the area most of them being the Chinook (king) salmon.
In 2022 it was passed federally to begin the demolition of these dams and allow the fish to migrate back to their original homes from more than 100 years ago. Some of the smaller dams along the tributaries have already begun to be taken down. The teams servicing the area and monitoring the salmon say that the dams should be completely gone in time for the Chinook (king) salmon spawning season. They are hopefull that some will migrate into the streams this year but are confident that they will next year.
